22/05/05 - I have, over the years, amassed a huge collection of one-liners and
useful commands. I thought it would be nice to start sharing these useful tidbits with
others. So the first collection of mini-tips
has been added to the Tips and Tricks Area. This first collection
includes 22 one-liners:
- Watch a log file as its appended to
- Redirect a man page to a file
- Allow a command to continue execution after logout
- Extract tarball when tar has no z option
- Display one particular line from a file
- Display current runlevel
- Split lines of text into n-char lines
- Temporary directories
- Insert spaces at beginning of each line in vi
- Make init re-examine /etc/inittab
- Find out MAC address
- Display last 10 system reboots
- Set backspace to do the right thing
- Linux - display /proc information
- Solaris - display processor information
- Solaris - display memory information
- Solaris - display system information
- Solaris - find out whether kernel modules are 32 or 64-bit
- Solaris - kill all matching processes
- Solaris - get syslogd to re-read config
- Solaris - display numeric uid
- Solaris - crude halt
I have tons more of these tip files sitting around on my machines, and am
in the process of consolidating the information, so plenty more of this sort
of thing will be appearing on the site over the coming weeks!

10/05/05 - Last month was very busy for me, hence no updates. I started a new
job and the site unfortunately fell by the wayside. But that's all changed now!!
Let's start with a tip - Launching Simultaneous Processes and
Monitoring Exit Statuses which makes use of the $! variable and the wait
builtins of the Korn shell.
And while we're at it, let's add another tip - Using vi-mode
Line Editing in tcsh.
